Build your first startup pilot with AI—and a clear reason to stop

How do I scope a first startup pilot with AI?

Choose one customer situation, one assumption to test, and one complete workflow. Agree the delivery boundary and acceptance criteria before building. Test with a real prospective user and write down what evidence would justify continuing or stopping.

The first version of a startup should help answer a question that matters. Will a particular person use this to solve a particular problem? Will they return? Is the improvement worth paying for or changing their routine?

AI-assisted development makes a small pilot easier to attempt. It does not remove the need to choose the question.

Choose one customer situation

Avoid “an app for small businesses.” Choose something observable: independent consultants lose track of proposals that need a follow-up. A first pilot could show a list of proposals, the next action, and the date someone intends to act.

You can test the workflow manually before adding integrations. If a customer does not care about the list, connecting their inbox will not automatically make the product useful.

Write a pilot brief with boundaries

Define the acceptance test before implementation. A participant should be able to add a proposal, find what needs attention, and record the action they took.

Build only the complete core

Give the agent a small set of realistic examples with identifying details removed. Ask for empty, error, loading, and completed states. A reliable modest workflow teaches more than five partially working features.

Keep the repository understandable with setup notes and a clear data model. Connect its intended deployment branch to Railway. Use reviewed migrations for Supabase and keep credentials in environment settings. Check that one participant cannot see another's records.

Test the pilot with a person

First verify the deployed app yourself: add, refresh, edit, sign out, and sign in. Then observe a participant using it without step-by-step coaching.

Ask what they expected, what they could not find, and what they used instead. Look for voluntary return use, not just polite enthusiasm during a demo. Do not treat a signup as proof that the proposed workflow solves a meaningful problem.

Set the decision before the result

Choose a practical review date and write down what would justify another iteration. You might look for a recurring use case, clear evidence of saved effort, and willingness to continue. These are your experiment criteria, not universal startup benchmarks.

Also define when to stop or change direction. If the strongest customer need is drafting proposals rather than tracking follow-ups, the pilot should help you notice that.
